Jay Hewitt is a litigation attorney in the Derrick Law Firm Injury Lawyers Greenville, SC office. Jay is a lifelong Greenville native and knows the community and legal landscape from practicing law in the area for over 20 years. He received his undergraduate degree from Wake Forest University and law degree from the University of South Carolina School of Law. He spent much of his legal career as a partner at a large regional defense law firm in Greenville, representing insurance companies and corporations.  He understands the complexities of how insurance companies and defense lawyers handle and defend litigation and uses that knowledge to help his clients. He has tried cases in state and federal court in South Carolina and argued appeals both to the South Carolina Supreme Court and Court of Appeals as well as the United States Court of the Appeals for the Fourth Circuit in Richmond, Va. He has handled cases involving mass tort hotel fires, dram shop liability, nursing home abuse and neglect, motor vehicle collisions, trucking accidents, commercial fraud, medical malpractice, wrongful death, personal injury, sexual assault, premises liability, products liability, and class actions.

Jay is passionate about helping people and spent a portion of his career helping people with Type 1 diabetes since he was diagnosed with diabetes in law school.  His personal philosophy of hard work and determination to overcome obstacles and achieve success drove him to race the Ironman triathlon, and he ultimately qualified and raced for several years on the U.S. National Triathlon Team in Europe and Australia, despite having Type 1 diabetes. He also spent a portion of his career working in leadership for a multinational pharmaceutical company for patients with diabetes.

Jay lives in Greenville with his wife and three children. Out of the office, he spends most of his time with his wife and daughters who are active in dance competitions and while his son participates in sports such as AAU basketball. He is a passionate supporter of Wake Forest athletics and enjoys traveling to national parks where he enjoys spending time outdoors preserving the environment and quality of life of the upstate and Greenville community.
